American Slang 1 (美国俚语1)
你是否碰到过这种尴尬的局面:你已学了几年、十几年甚至更长时间的英语,当你和美国人交谈,却不明白他们在说什么。仅仅几个简单的小学单词放在一起却使你一头雾水。 为什么? 是因为美国人在谈话中使用了大量的俚语,也经常出现在报刊杂志、电影、电视、歌曲和家庭中。 因此,无障碍地沟通,听得懂并能说地道的美式英语,我们对俚语还是要多加注意。
Numbers in Slang (数字的俚语)
Zero (零) (to be a) Zero: To be deficient of an redeeming qualities (无可取之处) Example: You're dating him? He's such a zero! (你要和他约会?他这人一无所长。)
Zero in someone or sth.(to): To come closer to finding someone or sth.(把注意力集中于某人或某事) Example: In the medical world, they're zeroing in on a cure for the common cold.(医学界人事正致力于研究一般感冒的治疗方法)
One (一) From day one: Right from the start(从一开始) Example: He was mean to me from day one. (他一开始就对我很刻薄)
Give someone the once over (to):To scrutinize someone (审视某人;打量某人) Example: You should have seen how his brothers and sisters have me the once over when they met me for the first time. (可惜你没有看见他的兄弟姐妹第一次见到我时上下打量我的那副样子。)
One-in-a-million: Exceptional (万里挑一的;杰出的;特别的) Example: You're one in a million! (你可是万里挑一的啊!)
Two (二) Goody two shoes: An ostentatiously virtuous person (装腔作势,假正经的人) Example: She's such a goody two shoes. (她真会装腔作势)
Like two peas in the pod: Identical (一模一样) Example: Those twins are like two peas in the pod.(那对双胞胎就象是从一个模子里印出来似的,长得一模一样)
Three (三) Get the third degree (to): To be interrogated (遭到盘问) Example: As soon as I got home, my mother gave me the third degree. (我一到家,妈妈就对我问这问那的。)
