| 说文解字之三 似水「年」华 ——ann & enn 你还记得你自己或爸妈的「结婚周年纪念」（wedding anniversary）吗？何以「周年纪念日」的英文叫 "anniversary" 、而「千禧年」称为 "millennium"？ 英语中用来表达年岁的词汇中多半含有 "ann" 或 "enn" 两个拉丁字根，两者意义相同，皆表示「年份」、「年岁」（year）之意。明乎此，我们就很容易理解下列含有这个字根的词汇所代表的语意，例如： 1.anniversary﹝ ﹞n. [ ann + vers= year + turn，周年纪念日（原意为每年此一日期的重返）] 2.annual﹝ ﹞adj.（ ann = year，每年的；年度的；一年生的） 3.biannual﹝ ﹞adj. （ bi + ann =two + year，每年两次的；半年一次的） 4.biennial﹝ ﹞adj. [ bi + enn = two+ year，两年一次的；两年生的（记这个字的方法是由前往后看；记上一个字时是由后往前看，以免混淆）] 5.centennial ﹝ ﹞ adj.& n.（cent+ enn = hundred + year，一百周年纪念的；一百周年庆） 6.bicentennial﹝ ﹞adj. & n.（ bi + cent +enn = two + hundred + year，两百年的；两百周年纪念） 7.triennial ﹝ ﹞adj. & n. （ tri + enn = three + year ， 三年一次的；三周年纪念；三年生植物） 8.millennium﹝ ﹞n. （ milli + enn = thousand + year ，一千年；千禧年） 9.perennial﹝ ﹞adj. & n. （ per + enn = through + year，终年的；常年的；长期的；多年生植物） 10.annuity ﹝ ﹞n. （ ann = year ，年金；年金保险）。 脱离句子的单字就像无家可归的孤儿，因此我们现在马上给这些孤儿一个温暖的家吧！ 1. Tomorrow is our wedding anniversary.明天是我们的结婚周年纪念。 2. My garden is filled with annual plants.我的园子里长满了一年生植物。 3. I have to make a biannual report next Monday.下周一我得作半年度报告。 4. This is a biennial meeting.这是两年一次的会议。 5. There are many centennial houses on the street.街上有好多栋百年老屋。 6. There is a perennial shortage of water in this area.这地区长期缺水。 7. He lives on his annuity after retirement.他退休后靠年金维生。 8. We signed a triennial contract yesterday.昨日我们签了一项三年的合约。 9. People celebrating the millennium filled the plaza.庆祝千禧年的人们挤满了广场 |
